Eastern Zone

BIANCAVIGNA

With our Ogliano vineyard

The eastern zone, known as “Conegliano-Ogliano” in the book “I Terroirs della Denominazione Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Studio sull’origine della qualità”, is characterized by rolling hills with some vineyards having a North/South exposure and others with an East exposure. The Morenic soil, dated from the last ice age, is quite deep and its type is clayey-limestone.

OROGRAPHY

The altitudes vary between 70 and 170 m a.s.l. (229/557 feet). The hilly area has a north-south direction with vineyards located on the east and west side, and on the top. Slopes are gentle with a maximum of 20%. The landscape view is very harmonious with vineyards together with woods and hedges.

CLIMATE

The average temperature of August are lower than those [values compared to the average] of the eastern zone; this is not, however, related to the maximum temperature values, but rather to the minimum night temperatures lower than the average. This means that the temperature range is always significant with positive effects on the quality of grapes. This is thanks to the fresh air currents that affect this area. The rainfalls are definitely below the average.

PHENOLOGY

The vineyards already during the budding, and later also during the flowering, appear among the most precocious. Thanks to the air currents, this zone doesn’t suffer from late frosts and also [even] the health of the grapes achieves high levels.

SOIL

The hills overlooking the plain south of Vittorio Veneto characterized by extended hills with a north-south direction, have a certain similarity, in the shape of the slopes and in their gentle and irregular direction, with those with a marl substrate. However, the substrate is extremely different: it is composed by Wurmian glacial deposits and therefore relatively recent. The soil is mainly clayey / limestone, with a high amount of skeleton [ in the soil profile] and a relatively coarse ground texture.

The depth suitable to develop the roots is high and the soil has a poor water drainage; permeability is moderately high while the water supply is low.

GRAPES

The Glera grape from this area characterizes these wines with roundness and with a long persistency. This thanks to significant sugar levels. On the nose, these wines are with a medium complexity, with aromas of ripe fruit and spices. On the palate, they show finesse and neat territorial footprint perceived in the aromas, especially in the floral one.
